Resolve error message: Exchange Mailbox Quota Exceeded
Posted on 12 April 2017 by Beaming SupportWhen your Microsoft Exchange mailbox has reached its capacity you will be unable to send or receive new emails as it has nowhere to store them.
When trying to send email you are likely to receive an Exchange mailbox quota exceeded error message, as follows below:
#554-5.2.2 mailbox full 554 5.2.2 STOREDRV.Deliver.Exception:QuotaExceededException.MapiExceptionShutoffQuotaExceeded; Failed to process message due to a permanent exception with message. Cannot open mailbox /o=First Organization/ou=Exchange Administrative Group
This can be resolved by the user removing or archiving emails to create free space.
Alternatively, an administrator can increase the mailbox capacity from within Microsoft Exchange by doing the following:
- Navigate to Exchange Management Console, Recipient Configuration then Mailbox.
- Right click on the mailbox in question and choose Properties.
- Choose the Mailbox Settings tab and select storage quotas.
- At this page you can choose the size of the mailbox before issuing a warning, prohibiting sending and also prohibiting sending and receiving. This is measured in MBs but can also be set to the default for all the mailboxes.
This will then enable the mailbox to send and receive again, and should stop the Exchange mailbox quota exceeded error from appearing. However, if this is a continuing issue then primarily it would be best to look into archiving some emails.
